Rare Bird: Purple Finches in Ohio
A Purple Finch, rare for Ohio during this time of year, was sighted by webmaster Junior Barnes on September 19th. in southern Ohio. Three female Purple Finches were seen in black walnut trees in a wooded area. Usually arriving in Ohio around November, these birds have arrived approximately two months early. The report of the birds appeared in an eBird rare bird alert as shown below:

- Comments: "At first glance, it appeared to be a Pine Siskin. However, the wings lacked the yellow highlights. Was slightly larger than a House Finch. Had more prominent streaking than a female House Finch.Beside an adult Eastern Towhee for size comparison. Did not have the bill or facial markings of a female Rose-Breasted Grosbeak."
